My Story began when I was 5 years. old with me telling my mom that “I was going to be a Rodeo Clown”. Oh, it was cute until I turned 18 and started living one of my childhood dreams. From the age of 5, I always knew I wanted to be in the rodeo business. I can remember saddling my horse and riding out into my imaginary Grand Entry that would take place in our hayfield behind the barn. The announcer would introduce me as the stock contractor and I would ride out and tip my hat to the crowd. As a young child, I attended a rodeo and watched the stock contractor ride out into the arena and tip his hat as they introduced him, I thought that was the coolest thing I’d ever seen and planned that one day that would be me. Through the years I roped a few calves, rode steers, and when I turned 16 a good friend of mine Bill Woodward talked me into riding a bull. I rode bulls and bucking horses on and off for a few years. Until I started doing what my true life’s passion was fighting bulls, I talked a good friend of mine Kerry Bexley “Snowman” who was a bullfighter from our hometown of Lexington, TX into letting me fight bulls with him at Lexington. From there he let me help him out at the Sunday jackpots in Minerva, TX at the Kirks family residence. From then on I was hooked on the rodeo life I started working youth rodeos, open rodeos, and bull ridings. In 1995 I achieved a personal goal of mine to become a PRCA bullfighter the great Johnny Boren signed for me to receive my card. Once I received my PRCA card I fought bulls for many different stock contractors such as Rafter G Rodeo Co., Frontier Rodeo Co., Andrews Rodeo Co., Sammy Catalena Rodeo Co., Bad Company Rodeo Co., and The PBR. In my 19 yrs. of fighting bulls I’ve had the privilege of fighting bulls in 17 different states along with working at Mesquite Rodeo, The George Paul Memorial 3 times, Brent Thurman Memorial 12 times, Austin Extreme bulls, and even worked a performance at Houston Rodeo. I also have accredited The Two Bulls Protection reserve champion bullfighter title 2 times I share this honor with Chris Hammack. In 2003 I started realizing that I wasn’t going to be able to fight bulls for the rest of my life, and I also knew that I wanted to still have an active role in rodeo. So that’s when I started in the bucking bull business. Once in the bucking bull business, I was fortunate enough to have my bulls at the PBR Finals on several different occasions. Then in 2010 I knew I still wanted more than just to be a bucking bull stock contractor I wanted to be a rodeo stock contractor that put on my own events and that’s when we founded Diamond Cross Rodeo Company in 2011.
Dylan McManus grew up listening to old rodeo stories told by some of the greatest in the industry like Leon Coffee, Rob Smets, Miles Hare, Mack Altizer and of course his dad Wesley McManus to name a few. He had the opportunity to be around these legends due to his dad being a bull fighter himself and later a rodeo stock contractor. Dylan
Dylan would stand in the shadows of these greats and listen to all the good, bad, and ugly of bull fighting and rodeo and still wanted a chance to make his mark as all of them did. When Dylan was old enough to start school, he did very well the first couple of years aside from driving the teachers crazy with his non-stop chatter and bull fighting reenactments he would do for the class. Around second grade Dylan began to struggle in school, and it became very apparent that there was something wrong after getting additional tests done it was discovered that Dylan had a significant visual impairment. Dylan had to have additional testing done by specialists to determine just exactly what was wrong. After numerous tests Dylan was diagnosed as a “medical mystery”. Dylan was deemed “legally blind” at the age of 8yrs old with no clear plan to fix his visual lose. His vision was 20/600 with glasses and 20/800 without he had no depth perception or peripheral view. He went to countless specialists that read his chart and ran tests on his eyes and still couldn’t come up with a different diagnosis. Dylan would sit in those doctors’ offices and hear them telling his parents that by the age of 16yrs old he would be completely blind. In true Dylan style he would comfort his parents about the bad news and assure them that everything would be alright, and God would heal his eyes. Dylan played football in middle school and basketball and tried to be as normal as his peers despite having to wear googles and his significant visual impairment. All through those trying years Dylan never wavered in the promise God made him to heal his eyes. He never let anything but that promise come out of his mouth despite the negative reports. Dylan’s eyes slowly started to improve with contacts and time. By his 16th Birthday Dylan’s long time eye doctor was in tears when she gave him the report that his vision had improved enough that he would be able to drive. He now has 20/30 corrected vision, depth perception, and peripheral view. He has now gone from a “medical mystery” to a “medical miracle”. What I can say about Dylan is that no matter how big the obstacle maybe he never backs down. He brings that same hard charging approach when he steps into the arena to fight bulls. Dylan no longer stands in anyone’s shadow and is making his mark in the rodeo industry all on his own.
